Tekeiya Jordan
Technical Recruiter at TierPM
About Tekeiya: I’m Tekeiya Jordan or better known as @KeiyaAV on twitter. I’m the assistant technical recruiter at TierPM. I graduated from Radford University (GO HIGHLANDERS) with a degree in Business Management. I have just recently relocated from Richmond, VA to Seattle, so if anyone has any fun things to do in Seattle tweet me.
Q: What is something in life that you are passionate about?
A: The thing that I would say I’m passionate about is helping others. I’ve always found myself working in positions where I’m able to do good and help others out. I realized this passion of mine when I was in high school and I worked to become a certified medical assistant.
Q: What is something unique about the A/V industry that not many people know (or you didn’t know before entering the industry)?
A: One thing about the A/V industry that I think is unique is how friendly everyone is. I have not yet had a bad interaction with any of my candidates or peers. Each person I have encountered is always easy going and great to connect and converse with.
Q: What’s the best advice about succeeding in the Audio-Visual industry that you have received?
A: The best advice I have gotten is simple: always trust your gut and always be yourself. This advice came from one of the first candidates I connected with when I informed him that I was new and to please “bear with me”. He simply said, “you’re doing great! Go with your gut and continue being yourself.” I took that advice and ran with it.
Q: What advice would you give to a woman/minority interested in entering the tech/AV industry?
A: Definitely don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and join communities such as Women in AV and the AVIXA Women’s Council. It can be scary to enter a male-dominated field, but we are strong and can handle anything!
Q: What would you recommend as the best strategy for someone who wants to follow the same career path as you?
A: If you are in the same situation as I was when I first started out, which was a recent college graduate looking for a job with a minimal background of experience, then look for opportunities that will allow you to learn on the job as you work. As an assistant technical recruiter, I am able to gain hands-on experience and mentorship from my co-workers as I grow with the company itself. This is actually the best job I have had. I get to talk to people while helping them out at the same time, I’m gaining more experience, and it doesn’t hurt that I work with a awesome team.
Q: How would you describe the relationship between A/V and IT?
A: I would describe the relationship between A/V and IT as the perfect harmony. A/V and IT go hand and hand.
Q: What do you see as the future of A/V?
A: I definitely see more diversity across the board. Since working with TierPM I have seen an increase in diversity within the industry. I’m confident I will see more growth as time goes on!
