A/V Spotlight: Meet Johnny Mota

Project Specialist at Graybar | Writer/Editor & Podcast Host at rAVe [Publications]

Johnny Mota works in technology spaces; ranging from residential, commercial, industrial spaces, and more. He is not only involved with design or tech support but is involved in every aspect available if given the opportunity in that project.

What is something unique about the Audio Visual industry that not many people know?

There’s a career in AV, and the future of it depends on the next generations of brilliant minded individuals. We need more fresh talent, so apply for a job today, & let TierPM match you with the right company.

What is something in life that you are passionate about?

AV is the obvious response to be passionate about, which I am, along with technology, but what really gets me excited, is the art form itself. Yes, AV & Technology can be very artful, and some manufacturers show it in their products; kudos to Leon Speakers in this category. I love art, it’s something I have been a part of my entire life, from things like drawing realistic landscapes, to rack elevations, or 3D models of a project that will help to envision the project at hand. I also paint, build, assemble, take photos and video (not just cellphone photography, but actual SLR & DSLR, as well as have taught this category to others in school.

What would you do differently if you were starting in your industry now?

I would have been eager to share my knowledge with others, earlier than I started to on Social media back in 2011. I probably would have done more with the “#AvTweeps” community I started, but it’s already blossomed into such a wonderful place to be involved is you are an integrator. The only thing I’d ask to change is that we focus more on the consumers, and end users. One thing I see more now is people bringing the “A&D” (Architect & Design) community into AV; something I and my team have been doing well since the beginning, and well before 2009. I hope that we all start thinking with them in mind, and the consumers.

What’s the best advice about the AV industry you have ever received?

I’m not sure if I have received good advice on the AV Industry except for “get continually educated”, which is good advice, no doubt. However, I say yes, get educated often, but also don’t be afraid to ask your peers for help. Don’t hesitate, don’t be shy, don’t let anyone discourage you either. The AV community is small by other communities standards, but we are large in spirit, and we are willing to help each other if asked for it. There’s a ton of free education, and even more people who want to see you succeed, you just need to be willing to ask for it.

What does a usual workday look like for you?

Long answer: Well, I have multiple jobs because California isn’t the least expensive state to live in, but regardless of where I am working and which point of day or night I am working, I’m managing projects with team members large and small. I’m often trying to engage with peers to continually educate myself, as well as the team, because not only do I want to grow as an individual, I want the team to grow as a unit.

Short answer: I’m a PM by day, and blogger/podcast host & digital media/community manager by night.

What’s your definition of an ‘influencer’?

To me, an Influencer can be someone of any age, race, gender, etc. In fact, I find myself influenced by both older and younger generations than myself daily. I think that’s why AV is such a great field; you can continually find inspirational people from all walks of life, and whether those people are your competitors or co-workers, there will always be talented, and brilliant minds surrounding us – it’s what you do with that influence that is truly important, not the amount of “likes” you receive. Be excellent to each other.

How would you describe the relationship between AV and IT?

They are two parts of the same technology, and we should stop talking about their convergence; instead realize that we simply could not have one without the other anymore, so it’s time to embrace & incorporate rather than discriminate.

What do you see as the future of AV?

More lighting will be incorporated into AV Projects. It’s not new to me, again I’ve been doing this as far back as I can remember, but I see more companies catering to this fact that integration of lighting as low voltage is slowly becoming a standard. Companies like Colorbeam, Loxone, & Lumastream are companies to watch in this category.
